About Sun Stoppers

For over 20 years now, the name Mike Burke has been synonymous in the Carolinas for high quality window tinting.

Our Founder

Mike Burke
MikeMike Burke graduated with a marketing degree from Western Carolina University in 1994 and spent 6 months of the following year as the #1 salesman at Scott Clark Toyota. He had always wanted to create something of his own, so in 1996 he moved to Myrtle Beach and opened his first tint shop, Innovations. Homesick after a year at the beach, he returned to Charlotte and started a mobile tinting company, The Tint Man, in 1997. He quickly became the primary tint provider for most of the stereo and accessory shops within a 50-mile radius of Charlotte. In fact, he was so successful as the Tint Man that in 1999 he created a new company, Lighting Mike’s, and opened his first retail location to keep up with demand. Over the next 6 years, Mike built Lightning Mike’s to 6 locations around Charlotte, offering a variety of aftermarket automotive services – inspections, A/V, accessories, wheels & tires – in addition to window tinting. During this time he also opened a small car dealership. By 2005, after gross sales of $1.6 million, Mike had a small child at home and decided to sell Lighting Mike’s to spend more time with his family. He chose to take a break from the auto industry, pulling on his educational background to start an ad agency, Pinpoint Advertising, which focused on direct marketing to upscale customers. After growing Pinpoint to self-sufficiency, he then sold it in 2006 to open Sunstoppers.

With Sunstoppers, Mike took what he’d learned building and running his first several companies, and decided to follow a Starbucks-type model, focusing on quality rather than quantity with an emphasis on providing a superior product and excellent customer service. By doing one thing – window tinting – extremely well, Sunstoppers built a reputation as the place to go for the best overall customer experience. Over the course of Sunstoppers’ 10 years in business, Mike has expanded his product offering to include mobile tinting services, automotive paint-protection film, roller shades, residential and commercial flat-glass tint and specialty and printed films for commercial storefronts, branding and advertising.

Sunstoppers now has 7 local retail locations, from Matthews to Concord and Huntersville to Lake Wylie,3 flat glass divisions covering the entire Charlotte metro and surrounding area, and 2 franchise locations in Charleston SC and Boston MA. As the company continues to expand, Mike is careful never to lose sight of the core values that make Sunstoppers great – motivation, teamwork, quality, putting the customer first, and – most of all – caring.

Local Managers

Kyle Jenkins

albemarleAfter finishing college as an art major, Kyle was working for a slave-driver of a sign company in 1997 when a customer came into the shop to pick up his finished signs – for Lighting Mike’s. Kyle immediately recognized his college friend Mike Burke, and the two caught up on the years since they’d graduated. Mike, who Kyle calls the king of giving opportunities, offered to hire him to work for Lighting Mike’s, making signs and graphics, along with running the front counter. As they worked together Mike pushed Kyle to let him teach him to tint. He resisted at first, but finally gave in, with one caveat: if he was going to learn to tint, he wanted to learn to be the best. When Mike sold the business in 2005, Kyle left Charlotte to work for Verizon where he became the #7 salesman for the entire midwest. He quickly realized that he didn’t enjoy the cutthroat corporate culture and moved back to Charlotte where he ran a couple of home-based business that he also became disillusioned with. When the opportunity came up to rejoin Mike, this time at Sunstoppers, Kyle took it and has never looked back. His personal goal is to be like Mike – building relationships and providing the best experience possible. He believes that anyone can tint a window, but educating the customer and showing them we care; that’s what sets Sunstoppers apart.

VJ Ratliffe
VJ had held a number of different jobs, from certified GM technician, to mortgage finance, to custom stair building by the time he met Mike Burke while working the front desk at Lifetime Fitness. After several months of knowing each other in passing, Mike approached VJ and asked him what a hardworking young man like him was doing working the front desk at a gym. VJ was familiar with Sunstoppers, and never one to beat around the bush, Mike told VJ if he thought he wanted to be a part of it to meet him at his Matthews shop that morning. VJ spent the day riding around to each store with Mike, meeting the other employees and learning how the business operated. After 3 more days together, VJ quit his job at Lifetime to start working full-time for Sunstoppers and hasn’t looked back. He is a hard worker and fast learner – after 2 1/2 years, he is about to step up to running the Albemarle Road store when Kyle moves on to take the reins at the new location on South Blvd.

Professional Glass Tinting

At Sun Stoppers, we work to show the benefits of window tinting.  Not only will your windows look better, they will BE better.

Window film comes in many colors and styles, bringing beauty and function.

  • Glare reduction
  • UV protection
  • Heat rejection

Unfortunately, as with many industries, the window tint business also has its low-quality side. Cheap poor performing window film is sold at auto parts stores or installed by questionable tint shops. This window film soon turns ugly and inefficient, becoming purple, bubbling, and cracking quickly under the sun.

At Sun Stoppers, we sell only the highest quality window film accompanied by a Lifetime Performance Warranty, and, of course, exceptional customer service.
